Rafik Hariri assassination anniversary draws son back to Lebanon
Version 0 of 1. The former prime minister Saad Hariri has returned to Lebanon to mark the 10th anniversary of his father’s assassination, a killing that sharply divided the country. Rafik Hariri, also a former prime minister, was killed with 21 others by a large truck bomb on a Beirut seaside road on 14 February 2005. Saturday’s visit marks Saad Hariri’s second return to Lebanon after four years in self-imposed exile, having visited briefly in August. He left Lebanon in January 2011 after his government was brought down by Hezbollah and its allies. Hariri was scheduled to give a speech later on Saturday at a ceremony making the assassination. His father was Lebanon’s most prominent Sunni politician. A United Nations-backed tribunal is trying in absentia five members of the militant Hezbollah group, the country’s most powerful Shia faction, for the bombing. |
