A mugger knocked a 92-year-old man to the ground as he made a grab for his wallet before fleeing with just £5, police said.

The pensioner was attacked in the communal entrance of Ingestre Court in Soho, central London, after the attacker followed him.

Police, who described the attack as "sickening", issued a CCTV image showing the robber taking the wallet and leaving the victim on the floor.

The widower suffered a shoulder injury.

Det Sgt Gemma Alger, of Westminster police, said: "This is a totally unprovoked, callous and sickening assault on a defenceless pensioner.

"The victim is fiercely independent and has lived in London all his life. His confidence has been eroded as a result of the actions of this individual and now he is fearful about going out."

The assault and robbery happened on 31 January at 20:00.
