The playlist: Latin American pop – Los Teke Teke, Buscabulla, Johnny Dominicana and more
Version 0 of 1. Los Teke Teke – I Say Duro (Dominican Republic) Carnival is en fuego around the world and producing loads of excellent street party music, but Los Teke Teke’s absolute jam is my favourite from the whole season. Rooted in gagá music (what Haitian rara is called in DR), vocalists Carlitos Wey and Crazy Design have a multi-octave interplay on their rhythm-feting song. The way it all absorbs into the drum, horns and ad-libs at once mimics the exact kind of exuberant chaos you want your carnival experience to be. Can’t stop watching this. Buscabulla – Métele (Puerto Rico) This video from Puerto Rican synth duo Buscabulla is part of Mala Mala, a forthcoming film documenting the lives of some of the country’s trans and/or queer community, directed by Dan Sickles and Dr Antonio Santin. The song is an ode to self, as it were, with melodies that sometimes match Janet Jackson’s classic Let’s Wait Awhile, but cosies into its own sensualities – and the layers of all of our identities. Johnny Dominicana – Trópio de Acuario (Mexico) This is a loping love song from new imprint Apatía Nacional, and is Johnny Dominicana’s lethargic tale about a relationship gone sour. “No sé,” he repeats on the chorus, sounding totally non-committal about it all. Sano – Paranoia (Charisma Remix) (Colombia, Argentina) Sano dropped this single two full years ago on Matias Aguayo’s cult electronic label Cómeme, but it’s just now getting the full remix treatment. Buenos Aires duo Carisma have put out the best version; it’s chopped up into minuscule little parts that never ebb or peak like you expect it to. Paulina Rubio feat Morat – My New Addiction (Mexico, Colombia) The first new song in three years from bananas-popular singer Paulina Rubio laments a “new vice” – also known as a bad boyfriend. Countered by Bogotá band Morat, who helped write the song, it’s as catchy as it could be, and is sure to be a singalong hit for Rubio’s return. |
