Becky Watts balloon memorial event held in St George park Bristol
Version 0 of 1. Hundreds of mourners have gathered to release balloons in memory of teenager Becky Watts who vanished from her Bristol home and whose remains were found last week. Friends, family and members of the public met at St George park, Bristol, close to where Watts was last seen alive, to remember the 16-year-old girl. Her stepbrother, Nathan Matthews, 28, has been charged with her murder and his girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, 21, is accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Four other people, three men and a woman, have appeared in court charged with assisting an offender by disposing of and concealing body parts. Hundreds of colourful helium balloons were released in tribute to Becky during the poignant memorial. Many of her family members, including Darren Galsworthy, her father, and Anjie Galsworthy, her stepmother, attended the event. Luke Oberhansli, 17, Becky’s boyfriend, was also seen releasing a pink balloon. John Galsworthy, her grandfather, said the family was amazed by how many people had turned up. He said: “It was absolutely wonderful. There are about 300 people here, maybe more. It wasn’t organised by the family but by a lady who wishes to remain anonymous, but we heard about it and decided to come. “Lots of people have been holding events in Becky’s memory but we haven’t heard about them until after, so it was great we heard about this one in time to come. Becky has touched the heart of the world, we’ve had condolences from all around the world “As a family we’re just trying to take each day as it comes and support each other through this extremely difficult time. “It was nice for Darren to come because he hasn’t been able to see the support they’ve been getting from everyone. “Becky has touched the heart of the world, we’ve had condolences from all around the world, she has brought the community together. There were lots of colourful balloons today – that is who Becky was, she was nice, bright and wonderful.” Becky, from the Bristol district of St George, disappeared on 19 February. Body parts were found at a house around two miles from her home last Monday night. Speaking before the memorial event, Sam Galsworthy, Becky’s uncle, said the family would “stand strong in court”. He added: “Becky is going to be laid to rest in the most loving, perfect and peaceful way.” |
