Ukip’s energy spokesman 'an idiot' after urging people to turn all their lights on for Earth Hour
Version 0 of 1. Ukip’s energy spokesman has been branded an idiot after urging people to “strike a blow against climate hysteria” and turn all their lights on for Earth Hour. Roger Helmer, Ukip’s MEP for the East Midlands, instigated the less-than-successful boycott with a tweet shortly before the event in which 172 countries and 7,000 cities take part.
Strike a blow against Climate Hysteria. Turn all your lights on for "Earth Hour". This is despite the party admitting in 2014 that the UK was facing an energy capacity crisis in a policy paper ironically entitled “keeping the lights on”. The party, which vows to cut all subsidies for renewable energy and says climate change is still “a matter of debate”, said the UK was facing losing 30 per cent of its generating capacity by 2020. It said that in 2009 over 4 million households in England were classified as being in fuel poverty and while they think EU “green policies” are to blame, keeping the house lit up is probably not the best way to solve it. Indeed, one Twitter user, SuzanneM, calculated that if all 26.4m households in the UK followed Helmer’s plan it would cost the country an estimated £198,000 in just one hour.
.@LiberalIsland 26.4m households in UK; assume 15 lights in each @ 0.5p/hour. That would blow £198,000. Way to go, idiot @RogerHelmerMEP ! |
