High winds have caused travel chaos across the north of England, with major roads closed as gusts reached 70mph. At least one person has died as high winds brought chaos to parts of the north east of England and Cumbria.
A stretch of the M6 in Cumbria was closed after at least six accidents on a stretch between Kirkby Lonsdale and Shap, but has now reopened. Cumbria Police say the fatality occurred on the M6 as emergency services dealt with a spate of accidents in winds gusting up to 70mph.
A 50-mile stretch of the motorway was closed between Kirkby Lonsdale and Shap as lorries were swept over in the wind.
