Sunderland v Newcastle: Premier League – live! Sunderland v Newcastle: Premier League – live!
(35 minutes later)
4.33pm BST16:33
33 min: Breaking news from elsewhere: a fire has broken out near Manchester City’s Etihad Campus.

4.32pm BST16:32
32 min: Cabella finds some space on the right for the first time and goes on a jink and a dance into Sunderland territory. He beats O’Shea easily, leaving the Sunderland man on his backside, but his low cross is cleared.
4.30pm BST16:30
31 min: Gomez lives on.
4.30pm BST16:30
30 min: Gomez is down and in need of a meeting with the magic spray after a firm but fair challenge from Taylor.
4.27pm BST16:27
27 min: Newcastle have that shot! Kind of. Taylor’s free-kick from the left is headed away and Gouffran shanks a dismal volley high and wide.
4.26pm BST16:26
26 min: Any minute now, Newcastle are going to have a shot. Mark my words.
4.24pm BST16:24
25 min: Another Sunderland corner, this time on the right. Gomez takes it, Krul punches it away. “Just wanted to add my carcass to your MBM tally,” says George Meikle. “In this case paying bills, listening to Bach Mass in B, and reading you. In no particular hierarchy.”
It’s pretty easy to see who’s providing you with the most cultural enrichment.

4.23pm BST16:23
23 min: Larsson again hangs the corner high to the far post. Wickham wins the header and it’s deflected wide off Sissoko, only for Newcastle to be awarded a goal-kick. “Nothing is happening beyond the event itself,” says Ian Copestake. “This match is a very postmodern experience. A bit like Easter to the ungodly.”
4.21pm BST16:21
21 min: Steven Fletcher produces the first piece of skill from a Sunderland player since 1999, brilliantly turning away from Taylor, and sees his cross deflected behind for a corner.
4.19pm BST16:19
18 min: “I’m half-listenng to the radio coverage, which most seems to consist of cheers, boos, jeers and groans and the constant claims by the commentators that this is a passionate north-eastern affair and so on,” says Charles Antaki. “Am I right in inferring that the actual football is awful?”
More could be happening.
4.18pm BST16:18
17 min: Steven Fletcher scored a hat-trick against Gibraltar.
4.15pm BST16:15
15 min: It’s been 15 minutes of aggression and fury from Sunderland, but they have nothing to show for it yet.
4.13pm BST16:13
13 min: With the big lads trotting forward from the back, Gomez tries to take everyone by surprise and catch Krul out at his near post. Krul has him pegged.
4.12pm BST16:12
12 min: Newcastle are not at the races. Ameobi wants too much time just outside the Newcastle area and when he loses the ball, he brings down Jones in a panic. A free-kick to Sunderland on the right.
4.10pm BST16:10
10 min: “I doubt you’ll be getting many emails what with people having lives, so I thought I’d lower the bar even further and tell you you have at least one reader,” says Ian Copestake. “This one is waiting on his duck to be cooked and recovering from Carragher’s voice.”
What’s it like to have a life?
4.09pm BST16:09
9 min: Larsson hoicks the corner high to the far post. Jones runs around the back and cushions the ball back into the six-yard box, where Gutierrez turns it over the bar. Just. Newcastle get the next corner away, but they’re not looking convincing at the back.
4.08pm BST16:08
8 min: Defoe skips down the right and plays a lovely pass to the left from Gomez, whose touch is poor. But there’s some encouragement here for Sunderland. Now they have a corner on the left.
4.06pm BST16:06
6 min: Newcastle mount their first coherent attack. Ameobi’s low cross finds Perez, who goes down under a challenge from Vergini. Mike Dean waves away a few half-hearted appeals for a penalty.

4.05pm BST16:05
5 min: “In the pre-match interview Dick Advocaat said of his players “What they showed on the training pitch was OK”,” says Euan Dewar. “He couldn’t go beyond “OK”. Hopefully for the Sunderland fans this is just modesty and not the words of a man completely devoid of hope.”
There’s no point raising expectations. That only leads to hurt.
4.05pm BST16:05
4 min: Now Wickham has a shot from 18 yards. It’s blocked. Then Van Aanholt finds space on the left and tries to drive into the area, but a heavy touch takes the ball behind for a Newcastle goal-kick.
4.04pm BST16:04
3 min: This is a furious start from Sunderland. Wickham storms up the left and hooks a pass over the top with the outside of his right boot, looking for Defoe. Krul is quickly out of his area to clear. Defoe was through.
4.02pm BST16:02
2 min: Larsson whips the corner in and Krul punches it away as far as Gomez, whose shot from 20 yards is blocked and cleared. Moments later, Jack Colback gets on the ball for the first time. The boos from the Sunderland fans are loud.
4.01pm BST16:01
And at a heaving, seething Stadium of Light, we’re off! Sunderland get the ball rolling, kicking from left to right in the first half. The good news for Newcastle, decked out in their grey away kit, is that Daryl Janmaat has survived an injury scare in the warm-up and starts at the heart of their defence. Newcastle don’t have a defender on the bench. And here’s an early test, Fletcher winning a corner on the left for the home side.

Here come the teams! A feast of football awaits. There’s no reason to expect anything less from these two magnificent teams. Here come the teams! A feast of football awaits. There’s no reason to expect anything less from these two magnificent teams.

Hello. Watching Sunderland on a regular basis cannot be fun. By my rough calculations, this is a team that has played well on roughly eight occasions in the past three years, which isn’t going to do much for anyone’e sense of chi. Martin O’Neill tried to bring the good times to the Stadium of Light. He failed. Paolo Di Canio tried. He banned ketchup. He did keep them up in 2013. But, ultimately, he failed and it was over to Gus Poyet. He got them to the League Cup final and kept them up against all the odds last season. But he failed in the end, his final match ending in a humiliating 4-0 home defeat to Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa three weeks ago. Sunderland’s managers always seem to fail in the end. Dick Advocaat has a tough old job on his hands and it didn’t start well, his first match ending in a late 1-0 defeat to West Ham two weeks ago.Hello. Still, if there’s one consolation for Big Dick, it is that this most moribund of teams tend to reserve their best stuff for this fixture. Sunderland have won their past four meetings against Newcastle, once under Di Canio and three times under Poyet, and they’ll be desperate for that run to continue this afternoon. They have not won in the league since January, they are only a point above the bottom three and it’s looking grim. Sunderland have won only four times in the league this season, although they may have a good chance of making that paltry record five against a Newcastle side that has won twice in 2015 and once in their past five matches. Unless, of course, the proudest of proud Proud Geordies, John Carver, has decided nothing less than a quarter-baked performance from his collection of heroic high-achievers.Still, if there’s one consolation for Big Dick, it is that this most moribund of teams tend to reserve their best stuff for this fixture.
