A teenage boy has died after falling off a cliff on the Northumbrian coastline.

The boy, identified as 16-year-old Joshua Smith, was rescued from the sea and taken to hospital where he later died, Northumbria police said.

According to a statement, officers were called out in the early hours of Sunday morning after receiving reports that Smith, from the Berwick-upon-Tweed area, had fallen at Spittal Point near the border town.

“Emergency services attended along with the RNLI and a 16-year-old boy was recovered from the sea. He was taken to Wansbeck general hospital where he later died. Enquires are in the early stages to establish the circumstances,” the statement read.

Newcastle’s Evening Chronicle reported that John Dunn, the RNLI’s local station manager, said rescuers had tried to find the boy from land.

He said: “The were just on the edge of the cliff with torches and searchlights trying to spot the guy in the water. The helicopter was there doing its job and pulled him out of the water pretty quick.”

The RNLI said: “Berwick RNLI all-weather and inshore lifeboats launched in the early hours of Easter Sunday to help search for a 16-year-old boy. The lifeboats launched at 2.40am to search an area off Berwick.

“The boy was recovered from the sea near Spittal promenade by RAF Boulmer’s search-and-rescue helicopter and airlifted to hospital, where he later died. The thoughts of the lifeboat crew are with the boy’s loved ones at this very sad time.”
