Man killed in early morning accident on A76 near Thornhill

A man has died after he was struck by a vehicle near Thornhill.

Police said they were called to the scene of the accident on the main A76, which runs between Dumfries and Kilmarnock, at 01:05.

A spokeswoman said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and inquiries into the incident were continuing.

The A76 between Thornhill and Carronbridge was closed for more than eight hours following the accident.

A 40-mile diversion was put in place before the road reopened at 09:15.
