Much of Britain is basking in glorious sunshine, and forecasters predict the spell of good weather could continue until the weekend.

Temperatures were expected to reach 19C (66.2F) in parts of the country – hotter than Rome, the Greek islands of Zante and Kefalonia, and almost 8C higher than the April average for the UK.

Andy Ratcliffe, a forecaster at MeteoGroup, said: “It’s dry for most of the UK, away from the west of Scotland, and most places are seeing sunshine and feeling warm. The warmest places are in mid to south Wales, where temperatures could get as high as 18C or 19C.

“Over the next couple of days it will stay mostly dry across the UK, with some sunshine, and we’re looking at highs of 17C. From Friday though we could see a few showers starting.”

Sally Webb, a fellow forecaster at MeteoGroup, said reports of possible thunderstorms as a result of warm air coming in from the continent – a phenomenon known as the Spanish plume – were probably premature.

“It is a bit early in the season to be considering something like the Spanish plume and we will just see a continuation of the weather from the weekend,” she said.

In Scotland, the north-east will see the warmest weather on Tuesday, following on from the Easter Sunday high of 20.7C in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, while most of Northern Ireland, particularly the east coast, will be in sunshine.

The average UK temperature for April is 11.4C, according to the Met Office.
