Michael Phelps back in the pool next week after six-month ban Sorry - this page has been removed.
(about 1 month later)
Michael Phelps will return to competition next week in Arizona after serving a six-month suspension following a drink-driving conviction. This could be because it launched early, our rights have expired, there was a legal issue, or for another reason.
Phelps will be joined by the Olympic gold medallists and world-record holders Katie Ledecky and Ryan Lochte at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Mesa on 15-18 April.
“My suspension is finally up! Time to get back in the pool and race again! Looking forward to #mesa !!” Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, said on Twitter. For further information, please contact:
It was at Mesa in 2014 where Phelps returned to competition after his two-year retirement. His latest absence from the sport was enforced when he was arrested last September after speeding, crossing the double-lane lines inside a Baltimore tunnel and failing a breath test.
The 29-year-old checked into a rehab clinic following his arrest and is still serving 18 months of probation.
As part of the sanction from USA Swimming, Phelps was also told he would not be able to represent the US at the world championships in August or the Pan-American Games the previous month.
However last month, the USA Swimming executive director, Chuck Wielgus, said the 18-times Olympic champion may yet to be allowed to participate at the worlds in Russia.
