Headingley’s new floodlights went on shortly before the lights went out on William Porterfield’s second innings. With the four rose-shaped heads twinkling bright, Porterfield followed his depositing of James Middlebrook for six by picking out cover later in the same over. Another controversial dismissal at Headingley, after Andrew Gale was caught to end Yorkshire’s first innings, having towered a waist-high full toss to cover. Gale queried the legitimacy of the delivery with the umpires before Sam Hain took the catch but umpires Steve Garratt and Jeremy Lloyds saw no issue and Boyd Rankin registered Championship-best figures for the second match in succession. Two balls earlier Jack Brooks had sliced to third man to terminate a 54-run stand for the ninth wicket.Another controversial dismissal at Headingley, after Andrew Gale was caught to end Yorkshire’s first innings, having towered a waist-high full toss to cover. Gale fell four runs short of a hundred but this was still his best innings since July last year and how his team needed it. A good pitch provides a good game and there is enough pace here to keep it interesting. Tom Cooper, one of five Somerset batsmen on a pair, played on when attempting to reverse sweep a delivery from Rayner having hit a breezy 42. Trescothick was bowled by a rare delivery that turned and Jim Allenby, yet to fire fully at his new county, was lbw to James Harris for a brisk 28. Then Alex Barrow avoided his pair but he did not last much longer, presenting another slip catch and another wicket to Harris, who has had a fruitful match.Tom Cooper, one of five Somerset batsmen on a pair, played on when attempting to reverse sweep a delivery from Rayner having hit a breezy 42. Enter Peter Trego, who has just scampered a single to avoid his pair. At tea Somerset are 211-5, a lead of 302. James Hildreth has batted calmly; he is 41 not out and has been more composed than some of his partners. There is talk of the declaration but the way Somerset’s lower order have been batting recently that may be redundant.Enter Peter Trego, who has just scampered a single to avoid his pair. An update from The Oval on another busy day chasing rebel cricket leagues and England one-day squads. We have just witnessed a sparkling century from 17-year-old Essex right-hander Daniel Lawrence in just his second first-class match, having finally been removed for 161 when he was caught behind off Zafar Ansari (himself an England call-up today) trying to run a ball down to third man. Lawrence, who looked very strong through the off side and struck 17 fours and two sixes in his 206-ball showing, has pushed Essex to 469 for six, a lead of 129 over Surrey. An update from The Oval on another busy day chasing rebel cricket leagues and England one-day squads. There are five Somerset players on a pair as they embark upon their second innings. Somerset have enjoyed the day more. The last two Middlesex wickets were taken by Lewis Gregory, both lbws as the second new ball swung just enough. When he captained England U19s Gregory did so primarily as a batsman. He is currently operating for Somerset primarily as a bowler, taking the new ball. He now has eleven Championship wickets this summer at a terrific strike rate. He has also been leaking runs rapidly too. Clearly here is an exciting talent – and there is always the prospect that his batting (he’s a wonderful timer of the ball) will progress as quickly. In recent times he has bowled far more effectively with a red ball than a white one. So his is an interesting selection. What’s more not many international cricketers have hailed from Plymouth. When he captained England U19s Gregory did so primarily as a batsman. The chances of Gregory meeting up with Tim Murtagh in Dublin have diminished since the Irishman failed to appear at the end of Middlesex’s innings. He acquired a back problem between breakfast and the start of play. The chances of Gregory meeting up with Tim Murtagh in Dublin have diminished since the Irishman failed to appear at the end of Middlesex’s innings. Somerset have lost one wicket, that of Tom Abell bowled by James Harris for 13. As in the first innings Abell look accomplished while he was there. He now has his finals to complete after which he is likely to feature in Somerset’s top order, hopefully for a very long time. For those who like to project into the middle distance the names of Gubbins and Abell are worth remembering.Somerset have lost one wicket, that of Tom Abell bowled by James Harris for 13. A couple of stoppages and a couple of wickets to report from Headingley before lunch, which has been taken early due to a second shower. Jack Leaning and Andrew Hodd both picked out fielders off Boyd Rankin - at deep square-leg and backward point respectively - while Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale has passed 50, doing so in the company of his brother-in-law Tim Bresnan, whose England recall may have been confirmed by the time he resumes his innings. Yorkshire 222-5; trail by 213 runs.A couple of stoppages and a couple of wickets to report from Headingley before lunch, which has been taken early due to a second shower. It’s not that warm here either, though unlike Richard Gibson I do not have a dashboard sophisticated enough to send me messages like “Risk of Ice”.It’s not that warm here either, though unlike Richard Gibson I do not have a dashboard sophisticated enough to send me messages like “Risk of Ice”.
However it is dry at the moment and there is a “Risk of Overton”. Who knows what he will deliver this morning? Last night Jamie Overton propelled an eye-catching penultimate over, which had the poles of Simpson and Rayner cartwheeling. He was fast and everyone, including the remaining Middlesex batsmen, will have taken note. However he is not a machine. I’m presuming Marcus Trescothick will start with him this morning. However it is dry at the moment and there is a “Risk of Overton”. Who knows what he will deliver this morning? It’s been a good game so far and anything could still happen since both sides have the capacity to lose/take wickets in bundles- as well as hitting plenty of boundaries. Attritional it has not been. It’s been a good game so far and anything could still happen since both sides have the capacity to lose/take wickets in bundles- as well as hitting plenty of boundaries. I ventured back to Headingley this morning in quite different conditions to the previous two days of this match. Imagine my surprise when a dashboard light came on to warn me of a ‘Risk Of Ice’. April 28 and it was only 3 degrees at a quarter past nine. Glad to report the temperature has been on the up since, although that might be something to do with the central heating.I ventured back to Headingley this morning in quite different conditions to the previous two days of this match. Tim Bresnan may have a warm glow about him too today, and not just because his new bowling action (as noted in my match report yesterday) is serving him so well. Do not be surprised to see his name amongst those announced this afternoon for England one-day duty in Ireland next week. Normality returned to Taunton after all that frenetic activity on the first day. This was more familiar early-season fare with rusty bowlers, missed opportunities and annoying April showers, all played out in front of hardy spectators eager to find a haven from a chill breeze. By the end Middlesex were 306 for seven.Normality returned to Taunton after all that frenetic activity on the first day. Yorkshire’s overseas players are not having a great time of things and India’s Cheteshwar Pujara kept with the theme of ill fortune when he was dismissed in controversial circumstances at Headingley. The Test batsman was given out after Warwickshire’s reserve wicketkeeper Pete McKay – deputising for Tim Ambrose – scooped up a rebound low down.Yorkshire’s overseas players are not having a great time of things and India’s Cheteshwar Pujara kept with the theme of ill fortune when he was dismissed in controversial circumstances at Headingley.
