Version 0 of 1.

It was always going to be an historic result, even if the opinion polls in the run-up to May 7 did not quite match up to eventual shape of Westminster.

While there will be less talk of coalitions, it is clear that the SNP surge has led to a seismic shift in politics north of the border, with the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats the worst affected. Scottish Labour lost their leader, Jim Murphy, while Danny Alexander, a key Lib Dem figure and cabinet member, lost in Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, as did Vince Cable, the business secretary.

The exit poll predicted the Conservatives are on course to win 316 seats - just 10 short of a majority, but a final YouGov prediction showed a much closer result. The SNP are expected to experience a landslide victory in Scotland.

Such an unpredicted final outcome has led to some big political beasts already falling to the SNP onslaught.
