SNP group on Highland Council to begin leader process

Highland Council's SNP group of councillors will meet later to begin the process of selecting a new leader.

The move has been triggered by the resignation of Drew Hendry.

He was elected as the new MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, the seat previously held by Liberal Democrat Danny Alexander.

The SNP are the largest party in Highland Council's ruling administration which also involves the Lib Dems and Labour.

Mr Hendry is one of the SNP's new intake of 56 MPs who have been making their way to Westminster for the first time since the party's huge success in the general election.

Mr Alexander, who was Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the last UK government, was one of the high-profile Liberal Democrats to lose their seats in last week's general election.
