A "respected" barrister who went on the run after sexually assaulting a teenage girl has been jailed for four years.

Desmond Rosario, 46, attacked the 15-year-old at a property in Sheffield in October 2013.

After he failed to appear before magistrates in 2014 a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was found in Birmingham after a Crimewatch appeal.

Rosario, of Abbotts Wood, Heaton, Bradford, was convicted after a trial at Leicester Crown Court.

'Despicable behaviour'

Speaking after the sentencing, Det Con Judith Proffitt said: "Rosario was a respected criminal law barrister who held a position of power and trust in the community.

"However, he is not above the law and his despicable behaviour has been recognised by the jury today.

"He continually denied his guilt, putting his victim through the traumatic trial process and further prolonging her anguish.

"I hope today's conviction allows the victim the closure she needs to move forward from this painful chapter in her life."
