England Under-21 squad includes Harry Kane but Luke Shaw is omitted England Under-21 squad includes Harry Kane but Luke Shaw is omitted
(35 minutes later)
Gareth Southgate has left the Manchester United defender Luke Shaw out of his squad for the European Championship but has included the Tottenham striker Harry Kane. Gareth Southgate has performed a surprising U-turn by making the eleventh-hour decision not to select Luke Shaw in the England Under-21 squad for next month’s European Championship, accepting Manchester United’s wish that the left-back should be rested this summer.
Both United and Spurs wanted their players rested for the tournament, which starts on 17 June in the Czech Republic. Southgate, who did choose Harry Kane against Tottenham Hotspur’s wishes, had also been minded to select Shaw until late on Monday, according to sources at the Football Association.
Southgate will reduce the 27-man long-list to a final 23-man squad before the group meet on 2 June to begin their preparations. Kane’s situation is complicated by the fact that Spurs play a friendly in Malaysia on 27 May and in Sydney three days later. But the coach stated that, after discussions with Louis van Gaal, it was made clear that Shaw, who is currently recovering from concussion, should not be selected.
The Everton defender John Stones is included in the squad for the tournament, and, after scoring 10 goals in 10 Under-21 qualifying appearances, the West Brom striker Saido Berahino is also named. He may feature alongside Burnley’s Danny Ings. “I’ve spoken with Louis and Luke’s situation was monitored,” said Southgate. “Luke was always very keen to come and Louis was supportive, but medically he was not fit to come. I knew that last Friday. It’s a shame, but we were always going to lose somebody.”
Ross Barkley, Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were eligible but have not been selected. Arsenal’s Calum Chambers is the only other senior international named in the squad. Shaw should recover from his concussion in time for Euro 2015, which starts on 17 June, and the warm-up seven days earlier with Belarus so Southgate’s decision not to pick him on that basis was unexpected.
Stoke’s Jack Butland is named and will be the No1 for the championship, while Tottenham’s Eric Dier, Arsenal’s Carl Jenkinson and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are other notable inclusions. Southgate suggested that his selection of Kane was not received well by Tottenham after Maurico Pochettino also complained about the striker’s potential selection.
Patrick Bamford, Nathan Redmond and Alex Pritchard have been rewarded for their form in the Championship by being included. “Tottenham are one of our best clubs in terms of all of the age groups we work with,” Southgate said. “I have a really good relationship with Mauricio Pochettio. Most clubs would prefer their players not to go away all summer and play, but we want to take the best players and give them this experience.
The Young Lions qualified for the tournament with an exemplary record. They dropped two points and conceded just two goals in their qualifying group before beating Croatia 4-2 on aggregate in a play-off last October. “It’s important that everyone has their say, but Mauricio has had a huge impact on the landscape for young England players here. He’s been very brave in his decision and several of our players have benfitted from that.
They play their first match in the tournament against Portugal on 18 June before taking on Sweden and Italy. Southgate’s team will play a friendly against Belarus on 11 June in Barnsley before departing for the Czech Republic. “It’s important how we manage his load in training. We’ll give him some additional time off when he comes back and report for duty a little bit later.”
