A Pennsylvania county councilwoman won a primary election this week, nearly two weeks after she died following a fight against cancer.

Allegheny County Councilwoman Barbara Daly Danko passed away on 6 May, but on Tuesday won the county’s primary election with 58 per cent of the vote, according to the Patriot-News. Voters elected Ms Danko as a tribute to the late councilwoman, according to reports.

“I am so gratified her legacy of independence and integrity resonated with voters,” Terri Klein, the chair of Ms Danko's re-election committee, told the Patriot-News. “Barbara represented us well, and most importantly, I believe this shows she earned the respect and gratitude of her constituents.”

The County Council will appoint someone to take Ms Danko’s seat on the council until a special election in November will determine who is to finish the late councilwoman’s term.
