The Sun publisher News UK is launching an app featuring free and cash games built around “key themes” from the newspaper.

The app for smartphones, tablets and desktops offers two free “skill games” including ‘Keepy Uppy Challenge’ and 12 games such as roulette where users can choose to stake and win money. One of the games where users can put down cash is Reel All About It, which incorporates sections found in the newspaper, such as puzzles, showbiz and sport.

The app is part of News UK’s attempts to bring more people into contact with the Sun brand online and develop new revenue streams after it began charging for online access in 2013. The Sun already offers two branded bingo games online.

Sun editor David Dinsmore said: “Our games, whether in the paper or online, are a firm favourite among readers and we fully expect Sun Play to become another popular part of the Sun’s gaming offerings.”

News UK CEO Mike Darcey said: “News UK constantly strives to increase the level of engagement users have with our brands and we recognise that the fastest growing way to play games is now on smartphone apps.

“We’ve had huge success offering the Sun on mobile and tablet and believe Sun Play is the ideal way for us to continue to extend our entertainment platforms, while also reaching new audiences.”

Mobile game maker Netkan holds the app’s gaming licence, which is registered in Gibraltar.

Metro, owned by DMGT, ran a gaming service online called Metro Play until September last year, when it sold the brand to 666Bet. In March the Gambling Commission suspended 666Bet’s licence to run Metro Play and its other brands.
