A police officer bombarded a former lover with 42,000 text messages and voicemails over a number of years, a court has heard.

PC Allan Smith, from Bovington, admitted charges of harassment and disclosing police information at Dorchester Crown Court.

The 54-year-old put the woman "in fear of violence", but charges of making threats to kill were dropped.

The officer, with Dorset Police, will be sentenced on 18 June.

'Unacceptable'

PC Smith, who also admitted a charge of using the police national computer for personal reasons, was suspended from duty after being charged in September.

The court was told he had been receiving psychiatric treatment.

In a statement, Dorset Police said PC Smith's behaviour was "entirely unacceptable".

"Laws are in place to be adhered to by all, without exception," a spokesperson said.

"The public rightly expect a high standard of behaviour from everyone at Dorset Police and they should be reassured that anything below this will not be tolerated within the force and will be dealt with robustly."
