Grimsby Town FC transfer fund appeal smashes target

A campaign to raise £20,000 towards transfer funds for Grimsby Town FC has reached its target on its first day.

More than 575 people have donated to the Mariners Trust Operation Promotion appeal since it launched.

The campaign is being supported by Euromillions winners Lee and Susan Mullen, who have pledged to match the fans' total with a donation of up to £20,000.

The money will be used to fund a "new, key player for next season".

Grimsby Town qualified for the Vanarama Football Conference play-off final in May but lost to Bristol Rovers on penalties.

'Amazing'

Terry Rudrum, chairman of the Trust, which has donated £5,000 to the appeal, said: "This is the best Town team that's been assembled in many years and people can see that - now it's about keeping it together and adding even more quality additions if possible.

"The response from the fans in the aftermath of Wembley has been incredible and we hope that their response to this initiative is equally as positive."

Writing on Twitter after the £20,000 target was reached, the Trust said: "Words can't describe how amazing @officialgtfc supporters are !! #OperationPromotion"
