Mr Simmons died in a hospital operating room. Mr Simmons attended Emanuel AME Church every Sunday for services and for bible study. His daughter-in-law, Arcelia Simmons of Newport News, Virginia told ABC.
Mr Simmons was the only victim to die at the hospital.
