Alton Towers rollercoaster crash victim Joe Pugh discharged

Another victim of the Alton Towers rollercoaster crash has been discharged from hospital.

Joe Pugh, 18, from Barnsley, was on the Smiler with his girlfriend Leah Washington, 17, when the accident happened on 2 June.

Mr Pugh was treated at the Royal Stoke University Hospital after his knees were shattered in the accident. Miss Washington had to have a leg amputated.

The hospital confirmed Mr Pugh had gone home on Monday.

It said Miss Washington and 20-year-old Vicky Balch, from Leyland in Lancashire, were in a "stable" condition.

'16 injured'

Two other victims, Daniel Thorpe, 27, from Buxton, Derbyshire and Chanda Chauhan, 49, from Wednesbury in the West Midlands, have also been discharged from hospital.

Mr Thorpe, a hotel assistant manager, was treated for a collapsed lung and fractured leg, while Ms Chauhan had internal injuries and needed stomach surgery.

A total of 16 people were injured when the carriage they were in collided with an empty one that had come to a halt on the track ahead of them.

Merlin Entertainment, which owns Alton Towers, has said all those on board at the time of the crash will receive compensation.
