Opposition leader Bill Shorten believes negative smear and fear during the Liberal party meeting is further proof there’s an election coming.

Shorten said the Liberals’ “love-in” in Melbourne on Saturday turned out no positive policies or new ideas and proved the party was stuck in the past.

“Tony Abbott, Joe Hockey and the Liberals are holding our country back at a time when we need to move forward,” he said on Sunday.

“And just more negative smear, fear and division from the Liberals. That’s how we know there is an election coming.”

The Liberals released an ad attacking Shorten but denied they were preparing for an early election.

The government maintains the next election will be held when it is due, about September next year, despite speculation of an early poll being called before the parliament returns from its six-week winter break.
