Janna Rommel-Opstaele, the mayor of the nearby coastal town of Middelkerke, told press agency Reuters that the bus driver had been killed and another seriously injured. Lisburn councillor Patrick Catney, who knows the family of the company owners, said: "This is so sad, it's so tragic.
"Some of the children with light injuries have been taken to hospital and local medical centres," she said. "This company is very long-established and has a great safety record - they only operate top of the line luxury coaches."
A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said they were aware of the crash and were working with the Belgian authorities to establish details. Mr Catney said his thoughts were with the family of the crash victim.
