Multiple state officials were cited in reports by local and national news organisations. Sweat’s condition was not immediately known but CNN reported that he was alive and in custody. Franklin County sheriff Kevin Mulverhill confirmed that Sweat was shot on Sunday afternoon in Constable. He said Sweat was transported to a medical centre in Malone but had no information on his condition.
Contacted by the Guardian, New York state police did not immediately confirm the news, which followed official confirmation that the other inmate, Richard Matt, was shot three times in the head when he was killed by a Border Patrol agent in the same locale on Friday. It was confirmed that no police officers or civilians were hurt in the confrontation.
The search for Sweat had concentrated in the same area in which Matt was found and killed, near the town of Malone. Sweat and Matt escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility, near Dannemora, on 6 June by using power tools to cut their way out of their cells and through heating pipes. Two prison workers have been arrested over with their escape. State police released information on the autopsy carried out on Matt. The post-mortem gave the cause of death as injuries caused by gunshot wounds to the head.
The hunt for them lasted more than three weeks and involved thousands of officers from multiple local and federal agencies. Physical signs that Matt had spent most of the time since he and Sweat broke out of the Clinton Correction Facility, near Dannemora, living rough in the forests close to Canada were also detected in the autopsy.
On Sunday, police released details of the autopsy performed on the body of Matt. Officials said the escaped murderer had bug bites on his legs, blisters and minor abrasions that would be expected for someone who had been living in the woods. Toxicology results were pending. A police statement said that the examination of the body by Dr Michael Sikirica “revealed bug bites on the lower extremities, blisters, and minor abrasions consistent with living in the woods for three weeks”.
Local reports on Sunday said Matt may have been drunk when he was shot. Official toxicology results, however, were pending.
