Alexis Tsipras has said that Greece will accept all bailout conditions proposed by the country’s creditors with only a handful of minor changes. A poll by euro2day has shown that the majority of Greeks will vote ‘yes’ to austerity measures proposed by Greece’s creditors.
In a letter sent to the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank and seen by the Financial Times, Tsipras expanded his idea for a new, third €29.1 billion rescue package. According to the poll, which was published yesterday afternoon, 47.1 per cent of Greeks will vote yes to austerity measures in the referendum and 43.2 per cent will vote no.
The second bailout package expired last night when Greece failed to meet a €1.6 billion IMF debt repayment. Tsipras then prosposed a third package and a new set of 11 conditions - along with a note saying Greece was prepared to accept the troika's proposals, which he received on Sunday. The same poll showed that Greece would vote overwhelmingly to say in the eurozone, with over three-quarters voting to keep the euro.
Angela Merkel has said the lenders will not negotiate a further bailout package until after the Greek referendum on whether the public want to accept the lender's proposals. The referendum is due to take place on Sunday. The figures reveal that Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras still has everything to fight for after a day in which he stood firm that Greece would go to the polls.
Most Greeks will still vote 'no' to the bailout terms proposed by the troika, though public opinion warmed towards the proposals after the banks closed earlier this week, according to a poll. Tsipras was widely expected to back down from the referendum after he accepted most of the bailout terms that had been proposed for a package of aid that expired on Monday night.
“Come Monday, the Greek government will be at the negotiating table after the referendum, with better terms for the Greek people,” Tsipras tweeted.
