New York to honor USA's World Cup winning team with ticker-tape parade
Version 0 of 1. The home celebrations are underway for the World Cup-winning US women’s national team. The victorious Americans were welcomed to downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday by a crowd of several thousand cheering fans at a rally. Abby Wambach joyously lifted the World Cup trophy while leading the roaring crowd in chants of “I Believe That We Just Won!” Fans began camping out before dawn for the rally, which was scheduled on less than 24 hours’ notice. USA claimed their record third World Cup title Sunday in Vancouver, routing Japan 5-2. Most of the women were headed home later on Tuesday before reconvening in New York later in the week to continue their victory tour. There they will be greeted with a ticker tape parade, the first female athletes to receive the honor in New York since Carol Heiss Jenkins won ice skating gold at the 1960 Olympics. “No one’s won the [Women’s World Cup] title three times,” Jenkins told the Wall Street Journal. “I think when you have somebody who’s done something that nobody’s done before in the sport – they deserve it.” The parade will start at 11am on Friday. |
