A man who spent two decades locked up for a murder he insists he did not commit has lost an appeal against his conviction.

Kevin Lane, now 47 and living in Kent after being released from prison in January, challenged the safety of the murder conviction at the court of appeal in London.

Lady Justice Rafferty, Mr Justice William Davis and the recorder of Birmingham, Judge Melbourne Inman, dismissed his appeal on Wednesday.

Lane, formerly of Potton, Bedfordshire, was jailed for life for the 1994 murder of a car dealer. Robert Magill was approached by two men as he walked his dogs in Hertfordshire in October 1994 and was shot five times with what the court heard was probably a sawn-off shotgun.

Rafferty said the court was “not persuaded that the safety of the conviction is in doubt and this application is rejected”.
