Stolen art is 'found' in car park Stolen paintings found in Zurich
(about 4 hours later)
Paintings stolen in one of the world's largest art thefts may have been found in a vehicle in a Zurich hospital car park, Swiss media have reported. Two paintings stolen in one of the world's largest art thefts have been recovered in an abandoned car, Swiss police have confirmed.
Zurich police closed the area around the Psychiatric University Clinic after a suspicious car was found. The pictures, by Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet, were among four paintings worth $160m (£82m) that were stolen from Zurich's Emil Buehrle Collection.
A police spokeswoman refused to say if the finds were connected with last week's robbery in Zurich. Police closed the area around the Psychiatric University Clinic on Monday after a suspicious car was found.
Four works by Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne and Degas - worth $160m (£82m) - were taken from the Emil Buehrle Collection. The paintings were taken from the gallery in an armed robbery last week.
Local TV station TeleZuri quoted a witness who said the car contained three paintings bearing the name of the museum.
And radio station Radio 24 quoted another witness who said a member of hospital staff had found paintings in an unlocked car.
A white car was towed away by police after examination.
Police said they would not release any more information until they could examine everything carefully.
The four paintings stolen were Monet's Poppies near Vetheuil (1879), Degas's Count Lepic and his Daughters (1871), Van Gogh's Chestnut in Bloom (1890) and Cezanne's Boy in a Red Jacket (1888).
