A 15-year-old boy has died after climbing on to a freight train and touching overhead power cables near Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

The boy was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene in the village of Wenthorpe on Saturday.

A 16-year-old male and an 18 year-old female were also injured in the incident which occurred shortly after 6:30pm.

The two teenagers are being treated in Pinderfields Hospital and they are not believed to be in a life threatening condition.

A British Transport Police spokesman said:  “At this stage it would appear that the two boys and the female were on the railway line and the 15-year-old boy had climbed on to a freight train at the location.”

The spokesman added that all three teenagers were from the local area.

The boy’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the local coroner.
