The escape of an orangutan from its enclosure at Melbourne zoo will be the subject of a full review.

The 11-year-old male Sumatran orangutan, named Malu, escaped its display area at the zoo and made it into the public area on Monday afternoon, before being cornered and tranquillised by zoo keepers.

“We will do a full review first thing this morning, as soon as it’s completely light. We’ll have our works team investigate the display,” Melbourne zoo director Kevin Tanner told the Seven Network on Tuesday.

Malu (also known as Menyaru) used a blanket to move wires and escape the enclosure, leading to an evacuation of onlookers to safe areas.

Tanner said Malu was lured back into an enclosure with treats, and the orangutan had found the experience stressful.

Malu’s teacher then took him through a training routine.

“He gave him treats through a slated window, and Malu presented his teeth and he presented his hands, as he normally does, and he presented his shoulder, and as he presented his shoulder, Ben injected him and he went off to sleep.

“So it was a textbook process for us.”
