Version 0 of 1.

Five people are wanted by police after a Manchester tram was derailed and a second vehicle had its windows smashed as passengers dived for cover.

CCTV of the suspects has been released following the incident, which happened at St Werburgh's station in Chorlton at 23:30 BST on Friday 3 July.

Five people threw stones through a tram's windows, causing passengers to lie down on the floor, police said.

The passengers were moved to a second tram, which was then de-railed.

Greater Manchester Police said they are trying to establish if the derailment was definitively linked to the attack on the tram a short time earlier.

Officers believe the group were involved in a "short scuffle" with a man at the Metrolink station before the incidents unfolded.

Det Con Mark Ledger said: "Whilst I am thankful that no-one was injured in either of these incidents, this must still have been a traumatic experience for the people on the tram who firstly had to take cover to shield themselves from flying broken glass as the group attacked their carriage, and then were subjected to a second tram being derailed.

"Incidents like this are thankfully extremely rare and we are working closely with the Metrolink Operators to investigate exactly what has happened here and identify those responsible."
