Car bombs exploded Wednesday at crowded markets in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of the capital, Baghdad, killing at least 26 people and wounding 58, the Iraqi authorities said. The first explosion took place in the southwestern neighborhood of Bayaa, killing at least 18 people and wounding 36, a police official said. A second car bomb detonated in the northeastern neighborhood of Shaab, killing at least eight people and wounding 22, the police said. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Islamic State militant group frequently attacks Shiite areas across the country.
