Water was pumped from the Grantham Canal to help fight the flames.
Bryn Coleman, from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, said: "We dealt with six separate businesses of various natures.
"It adds to the complexity of the fire fighting operation because of the multi-hazards which were involved and we firefighters had to deal with on scene."
It is believed a large two-storey building, containing six units, has been badly damaged.
Businesses thought to be affected include a cleaners, a taxi firm and a steeplejack.
Aerial platforms, specialist rescue units and environmental protection units were deployed but there are no reports of any injuries.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
