Parts of Britain brace for 'intense' rain and wind
(about 1 hour later) | |
Parts of Britain are set to be battered by very heavy rain and winds of up to 50mph (80km/h) in an “intense” day of unseasonably bad weather.
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings, urging people to be aware of rain and wind on Friday in the east Midlands, east of England, south-west England, London and south-east England.
The MeteoGroup weather forecaster Billy Payne said it was unusual to see such significant rainfall in 24 hours, especially across a large area in the south-east.
“We are looking at some very heavy rain across much of southern Britain today and into tonight. It’s already arriving into Wales and the south-west this morning,” he said on Friday.
“Across much of southern Britain we could see well over 20-30mm, and across the likes of East Anglia, south-east England, even London, there could be perhaps 50-60mm, maybe even more. It’s quite intense.”
Payne said the worst of it, particularly in London, would come overnight, although the capital would be hit with heavy rain during the day too.
He said people in Kent and East Anglia should expect “quite strong winds” of about 50mph on Friday night.
Temperatures on Friday would not get much higher than 17C or 18C.
Payne said Saturday would be warmer, with highs of about 21C, but things would deteriorate again on Sunday. After the unsettled weather it was expected to become dry again and warmer, but a heatwave before the end of next week was unlikely.
The Met Office yellow warnings are valid from middayon Friday until 9am on Saturday.
