(about 2 hours later)
Two British men in their 20s have been killed after their sports car veered off Austria’s highest mountain pass during an illegal race, police have said. Two British men have died after their car crashed while racing on a mountain road in Austria, police said.
The accident happened on Friday morning, close to the highest point of the 2,504-metre (8,215-ft) Grossglockner alpine pass, officials added. The UK nationals, aged 22 and 25, died when their Seat Leon fell 1,312ft (400m) from the Grossglockner high alpine road near the village of Fusch, 60 miles (100km) east of Innsbruck.
Officials said the men, aged 22 and 25, had been racing against another car when their vehicle suddenly skidded to the right, broke through a crash barrier and plummeted 300 metres. An Austrian police spokeswoman said the men had been taking part in a race between the Belgian capital Brussels and Budapest in Hungary since 18 July.
Helicopters were sent to the crash site to help recover the bodies. Police said they were still looking for the second car, which had fled the scene. They were on a road 8,000ft above sea level where the speed limit was 100kph when they crashed at 7.30am local time on Friday.
The scenic Grossglockner road leads from the town of Bruck, near Salzburg, to Austria’s highest mountain, the 3,798-metre high Grossglockner. The 30-mile route is renowned for its many treacherous bends. The spokeswoman said the 22-year-old man was from the south-east of England but released no other personal details.
She added that a 42-year-old British man who had been racing with them in a Porsche at the time was being questioned after handing himself in nearby Sankt Johann im Pongau at 11.30am local time.
