Teenage vlogger rebuked by police and RNLI after Tower Bridge stunt | Teenage vlogger rebuked by police and RNLI after Tower Bridge stunt |
(about 1 hour later) | |
A teenage vlogger known on YouTube as Carnage for his stunt videos has been severely criticised by police and a lifeboat charity after hurling himself off London’s Tower Bridge and into the river Thames while friends filmed him.
Shah Faisal Shinwari, a 17-year-old performing arts student who said the stunt was a dare from one of his 27,000 subscribers on YouTube, apologised and said he regrets the incident.
“This was my stupidest video idea to date and it will never happen again, I promise,” he tweeted on Friday. | “This was my stupidest video idea to date and it will never happen again, I promise,” he tweeted on Friday. |
Posting the clip a week after the incident took place, Shinwari said he “attempted it as I like doing crazy shit. This was later very regretted by me and I realised it was the stupidest idea ever.” | Posting the clip a week after the incident took place, Shinwari said he “attempted it as I like doing crazy shit. Passing tourists and commuters initially pay little attention to Shinwari, dressed in a red hoodie and Hawaiian-print board shorts, as he paces wildly on the pavement of the bridge and a friend urges him to jump.

The video then cuts to a shot of him falling from the bridge into the fast-flowing water. A friend shouts “Yo Faisal, get your shoe” as the water carries him further and further from the bridge, where a small crowd now looks on.
The teenager can be heard shouting “help” to onlookers, in obvious distress, before the video cuts to him receiving medical attention. Shinwari then speaks to camera in the hospital, saying he believes he would have died had a rescuer not thrown him a life raft.
Police officers responding to the emergency call after the stunt were quick to criticise the jump.
When it comes to acts of stupidity, tonights first call takes some beating. Please don't jump from any of London bridges as a prank. | When it comes to acts of stupidity, tonights first call takes some beating. Please don't jump from any of London bridges as a prank. |
A Metropolitan police spokesman said: “Police were called shortly after 19.30 on Thursday 16 July to reports of a person in the Thames holding onto a buoy near Butler’s Wharf. Officers from the marine policing unit attended and located the male in question.” | A Metropolitan police spokesman said: “Police were called shortly after 19.30 on Thursday 16 July to reports of a person in the Thames holding onto a buoy near Butler’s Wharf. “He had managed to pull himself out of the water and on to Butler’s Wharf, but was winded and in need of medical attention. He was treated by London ambulance service at the scene before being taken to hospital as a precaution. It is believed he jumped into the water from Tower Bridge as part of some form of prank filmed by friends. He was not arrested.”
Shinwari said he would be making a donation to the RNLI, the search-and-rescue charity whose lifeboat rescued him. | Shinwari said he would be making a donation to the RNLI, the search-and-rescue charity whose lifeboat rescued him. |
Definitely going to be donating to @RNLI Thanks again | Definitely going to be donating to @RNLI Thanks again |
Tony Wafer, RNLI community safety manager, said: “As a lifesaving organisation that works on the Thames, we are extremely disappointed that this young man chose to risk his life in this way. He was extremely lucky that the outcome wasn’t more serious. We’re glad that this young man regrets his actions, however we would strongly discourage anyone from doing anything like this. | Tony Wafer, RNLI community safety manager, said: “As a lifesaving organisation that works on the Thames, we are extremely disappointed that this young man chose to risk his life in this way. “Jumping into the Thames from a bridge is extremely dangerous - the shock of cold water makes it very difficult to swim and strong currents can rapidly sweep people away.” | “Jumping into the Thames from a bridge is extremely dangerous - the shock of cold water makes it very difficult to swim and strong currents can rapidly sweep people away.” |
