Police in Rangoon said they have seized more than 26m stimulant tablets with a street value of more than $100m.

Myint Aung, a counter-narcotics officer, said police discovered 26.7m stimulant tablets on Sunday after inspecting a parked vehicle in the northern suburbs of Burma’s largest city. He said the pills, identified as amphetamine hydrochloride, were packed in 89 bags.

Burma is also a major source of methamphetamine, a related stimulant, much of which is trafficked to neighbouring Thailand.

Police said the pills are worth about 5,000 kyat ($4) apiece, which would make the haul worth 133.5bn kyat (£68m).

Burma is the world’s second largest producer of heroin after Afghanistan. The Golden Triangle area, where the country’s eastern border meets northern Thailand and western Laos, has been known for its drug production for decades.
