Reliant Robin seen on CCTV crashing backwards through level crossing

Version 0 of 1. A Reliant Robin has been caught on camera crashing through a level crossing, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. CCTV shows the car travelling through the crossing before reversing back on to the railway once the barriers had come down. The driver then reversed the car into another set of barriers causing them to bend sharply. British Transport police (BTP) said the driver caused up to £15,000 of damage at the Pinxton level crossing, Nottinghamshire, as well as risking lives. Insp Anton Menzies said: “The car drove across the crossing then for some reason reversed back on to the tracks striking the crossing barrier as it was coming down. “The car then reverses into the opposite barrier before coming to standstill on the tracks. “Both barriers were extensively damaged as a result of the incident, with costs to fix them estimated at somewhere in the region of between £6,000 and £15,000. “However more importantly this was extremely dangerous behaviour that put the driver and the passengers in the vehicle’s lives at risk. They were very lucky that a train was not coming through at the time or the consequences would be unthinkable.” Police released CCTV of the incident, which took place just before 12.30am on Sunday 21 June, in a bid to catch the driver. Liz Pearson, community safety manager for Network Rail said: “This mindless act at Pinxton level crossing has caused damage to the railway, something which ultimately costs train passengers.” Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport police on 0800 405040. |
