Northampton Saints players apologise over 'glass smashing for fun' at pub
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-33772504 Version 0 of 1. A pub has received an apology after claims Northampton Saints rugby players smashed glasses, intimidated staff and urinated in a garden on a night out. The Northampton Chronicle & Echo first reported claims by the town's Princess Alexandra pub about the players' behaviour. The club said it did not "condone" such behaviour but claimed the incident had been "blown out of proportion". The pub posted details of the alleged damage on its Facebook page. It claimed players smashed glasses "for fun" and were intimidating to female staff on Friday. Some then went behind the bar "to argue they should be allowed to stay because of who they are and the money spent", the pub said. A spokesman for Northampton Saints said he could not comment on the specific allegations of the Facebook post, but was aware the incident had been "blown out of proportion". He said some players were on a night out with friends when glasses were broken when a table fell over. He added that the players tidied up the glass and the pub was left in the same state as when they arrived. One local resident, who told the Northampton Herald and Post he was in the pub at the time, said the players were "having a few drinks, playing drinking games, having fun and causing no problems". But the newspaper said someone else had contacted them backing the complaints. Northampton Saints said: "Members of the squad have been to the pub and apologised for any offence that they caused by their behaviour. "The club does not condone any behaviour like this at all, but until we have looked into it we cannot comment any further." The pub has been approached for further comment. Northamptonshire Police said they were not contacted about any incidents. |
