A 140-year-old seafront house that prompted councillors to take action when it was painted bright pink is being returned to its original colour.

Worthing council drew up measures to prevent future "inappropriate painting" after the Marine Parade property was given the makeover in March.

The former lifeboat house has now been partially repainted white.

The BBC has not been able to contact the owner who had not contravened existing regulations.

'Protect overall character'

A spokesman for the borough council said: "We are pleased that the property has been recently repainted white as this now ensures that the building does not detract from the character and appearance of the Conservation Area.

"We are currently bringing together all of the necessary legal requirements to enable us to go out to public consultation on the proposed Article 4 Direction in the next few weeks, which will enable the Planning Authority to control the painting of seafront properties to protect the overall character of Worthing seafront."

In April, the authority said officers would ask the owner of the house, which is not listed, to "tone down" the colour because it had no direct control over the property's paintwork.

The new measures will protect buildings along the seafront, from Splash Point to Heene Terrace, "from inappropriate development by the withdrawal of permitted development rights for any painting or works of external redecoration to the front elevations and any visible side elevations."
