The market covers a 21-acre site with 235 stalls selling fish and meat as well as warehousing. It is thought about 20% of the building is affected.
Several nearby roads have been closed.
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it was at the scene. It is not yet known if anyone is injured.
The fire can be seen across the city centre and crowds of people are gathering near the scene.
Witness Toby Ashcroft said people had been told by police to move back because of concerns about gas canisters in the building.
The fire service has described the blaze as "severe" and said crews were expected to be in attendance "for a while".
The council advised motorists to avoid the area. |
