Investigators believe explosives were used to ignite the blast rather than gas bottles found at the scene last month. Bomb experts have determined explosives, and not gas bottles, were responsible for the powerful explosion which shattered windows 60 metres away and flung debris along suburban Deighton St.
Mount Isa district officer Superintendent Russell Miller has appealed for the immediate and extended members of the Hinder family to be given privacy while they come to terms with the tragedy. They believe the ignition came from inside the caravan and have found traces of explosives on evidence taken from the scene.
Police said on Friday the mother of the two children had been “resigned to the fact” that they were victims of a murder-suicide.
Mount Isa district officer Superintendent Russell Miller said the mother, who was told of the development on Thursday night, seemed to be aware of what the explosion was.

He said the explosion on 28 July had also devastated the local community. “She was resigned to the fact,” he said. “The lady’s still quite grief stricken and still struggling to come to grips with it all.”

He said the coroner would have to release remains before the victims could be buried.
“We’re asking people to respect the family’s trauma,” he said. “It has been a very torrid week.”
He said the explosion on 28 July had devastated the town.
“This was a horrific event which has had a significant impact not only on the families, neighbours and friends of the victims but also the wider Mount Isa community,” Miller said.“This was a horrific event which has had a significant impact not only on the families, neighbours and friends of the victims but also the wider Mount Isa community,” Miller said.
