A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokeswoman said multiple 999 calls were received shortly after 16:30 BST reporting a child in the water.
"A man then got into the water to rescue the child, which he did, and then got into difficulty himself," she said.
A spokesman for Lyme Regis RNLI said the inshore lifeboat crew had attempted to resuscitate the man before he was winched on board the coastguard helicopter and flown to hospital in Dorchester.
