Hugo Weaving stars in #WeCanDoThis marriage equality campaign
Version 0 of 1. Australian celebrities and athletes have joined forces calling for marriage equality in a series of television advertisements. Two ads featuring the actors Hugo Weaving and Julia Morris started screening on Sunday, kicking off Australian Marriage Equality’s #WeCanDoThis campaign. The actors, along with AFL footballers from St Kilda and Hawthorn, religious leaders and former reality TV contestants are featured making hearts with their hands while calling for respect and equality. “We’ve waited long enough,” Morris says in the ad. “Everybody deserves to be equal.” Australian Marriage Equality says the campaign coincides with a cross-party bill to legalise same-sex marriage, due to be introduced when federal parliament resumes this week. The ads are also being broadcast on Foxtel and Win regional television while negotiations continue with other broadcasters. A fundraising push to broaden the campaign has raised more than $9,000 on the crowdfunding website GoFundMe. The group’s national director, Rodney Croome, said support for marriage equality was stronger than ever. “We have never had a better chance to achieve reform,” he said. On Sunday at least 4,000 people marched through central Sydney for a rally in support of same-sex marriage. The rally, organised by the group Community Action Against Homophobia, came a day after large rallies in Brisbane and Hobart. |
