New Jersey state police said on Sunday a trooper shot and wounded a 14-year-old boy who authorities believed was firing gunshots on a Trenton street.

The teen was shot in the lower extremities and hospitalised with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. His name was not immediately disclosed.

Police said the shooting occurred shortly after 10pm on Friday on Calhoun Street, as troopers and officers with the Mercer County sheriff’s office investigated reports of gunfire in the area. Authorities said the trooper shot the teen after a brief foot chase, but further details were not disclosed.

Authorities said a weapon was recovered at the scene. It was not clear if the teen would face charges. The state attorney general’s office will review the incident, which is standard procedure when a trooper fires a weapon.
