When Edward Drew, 25, lost his rag in a nightclub, he pushed a woman to the floor and glassed a man in the face when he tried to intervene.

As the glass shattered, a shard cut another woman’s throat. But the judge spared public school-educated Drew jail. Why? Largely because he worked for a City fund manager.

Noting Drew had a “privileged background and a lot going for him”, and bearing in mind his City career, the judge suspended the sentence.

Which invites the question: what if Drew had been a builder?
