Couple killed by car on Norfolk road after man 'pushed woman into traffic'

A couple who were killed by a car after reports the man pushed his fiancee into fast-moving traffic have been named by police. Nonita Karajevaite, 24, died after witnesses saw her partner, Tadas Zaleskas, 26, push her into the road on the A47 in Terrington St John in Norfolk. The Lithuanian couple, who lived together in the nearby village of Emneth, were both struck by a silver Kia travelling on the eastbound carriageway at around 2.15pm on Sunday. Officers said they had each earlier separately asked a farm shop worker to call the police. Zaleskas worked in a factory in March, a market town in Cambridgeshire. Karajevaite, a part-time beautician, was employed as a factory worker in Wisbech. An inquest into their deaths will be opened and adjourned in due course as the police investigation continues. DCI Paul Durham, of the Norfolk and Suffolk major investigation team, said Karajevaite's death was being treated as suspicious after several independent witnesses reported seeing her being pushed into the road. Durham said it was not clear how Zaleskas came to be in the road, adding it was possible that he deliberately threw himself into the oncoming traffic, stumbled or was pulled by Karajevaite. They had been walking barefoot along the verge of the A47 towards King's Lynn for about two hours. At 1.20pm, they stopped at Worzals farm shop on Walpole Highway where the man and woman separately asked a shop assistant to call the police. They gave no explanation, and left before police were called. Durham said the couple did not seem distressed so shop staff decided not to contact police. Their families have been informed and are currently being supported by police. Anyone with information should contact the Norfolk and Suffolk major investigations team on 101. |
