Funeral of North Sea trawlerman Fisherman's widow thanks locals

The funeral of the man recovered during the North Sea search for the four crew of a missing Scottish trawler has taken place. Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of a fisherman killed when a trawler disappeared in rough seas.
Edward Gardner died following the disappearance of the Meridian trawler last week. Edward Gardner's family thanked locals for their support at the service at Cellardyke Parish Church in Fife.
His funeral was held at Cellardyke Parish Church near Anstruther in Fife at 1030 GMT on Saturday. The 50-year-old was the only one of four crew members recovered when the Meridian was lost in the North Sea last week, 160 miles off the Aberdeen coast.
The ceremony was held in private following requests from members of Mr Gardner's family. A message of appreciation from Mr Gardner's widow Eleanor was included in the order of service.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor, his mother Ethel, two sons and a daughter. The Rev David Laing conducted the funeral service on Saturday in front of about 500 mourners.
Mrs Gardner's message read: "Eleanor and the family thank you for your attendance and your support at this sad time."
The Lord is My Shepherd was among the hymns sung by mourners who later attended a reception at a local hotel.

They have been named as skipper Martin Gardner, no relation, 49, Ian Donald, 55, both from Anstruther, Fife, and Sidney Low, 52, from Aberdeen.
The men had been carrying out observation work for an oil firm in Norwegian waters.
Mr Gardner is also survived by his mother Ethel, two sons and a daughter.
