David Cameron’s summer holiday in Portugal has been interrupted after he had to seek medical treatment for a case of so-called swimmer’s ear.

Downing Street said the prime minister picked up otitis while surfing in the Algarve, where he is staying with his family.

It is not the first time Cameron’s holiday has been blighted. Last Easter, he was stung by a jellyfish while swimming in the sea in Lanzarote.

No 10 said the prime minister has now recovered from the common condition and is enjoying his second holiday of the summer with his wife, Samantha, and their three children.

According to the NHS, otitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the ear canal. It is often referred to as swimmer’s ear because exposure to water can make the ear canal more vulnerable to becoming inflamed.
